Žony na konje — Frauen aufs Pferd

The “Easter Ride” is the best-known tradition of the Sorbian minority in Germany. On Easter Sunday, Sorbian men in tails and top hats parade from village to village to proclaim the resurrection of Christ. In recent years, the question has repeatedly arisen as to how this popular tradition could be brought into the present day, as in Sorbian Upper Lusatia (Saxony) it is reserved for men only. Not everyone wants to keep it that way, but many don’t want to shake the tradition – it’s a tradition, after all.

Novi Glas editor-in-chief Konstantin Vlasich and journalist Lukas Lottersberger travelled to Upper Lusatia (Saxony) at Easter to find out more about the best-known Sorbian Easter tradition and the role models associated with it. Actors such as Domowina chief Dawid Statnik and members of Kolektiw Klanki and Kolektiw Wakuum give us an insight into how they see the traditions. There is no getting around the existential questions of the linguistic minority.

The presenting and narration of this documentary film are bilingual – in Burgenland-Croatian and German.

Further accompanying material on the film and the Sorbian minority will also appear on noviglas.online.
