Skiing Season and Third Lockdown
in Austria
It seems paradoxical: Many skiing areas in Austria have opened their lifts right after Christmas. At the same time, a third hard lock-down started. Skiing and tourism lobbies in Austria are very influential and there are strong links to the ruling conservative Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP).
Although the ski resorts are only open to locals, critics fear that the openings might cause a new uncontrollable wave of infections and say that the ones in charge haven’t learned anything from Ischgl, the infamous Tyrolean village that became a symbol for spreading the coronavirus all over Europe. Apart from that, too many skiing and snowboarding accidents could put even more pressure on the distressed health system.
Experts say, the situation should be observed carefully and stricter rules at ski resorts shall soon be imposed. We will see in a few weeks the latest, if that is enough. (145 words)
