Wenger · The legacy of adunni olorisha
Austrian artist Susanne Wenger is well known in Nigeria, but not in her home country. Traumatised by the Second World War, she moved to Nigeria in the 1950s and and went on a quest of transformation.
Wenger lived and worked primarily in Oshogbo; she became a Yoruba priestess, receiving the name Adunni Olorisha, and helped to revive Yoruba culture and religion.
Together with other artists, she founded the loose collective New Sacred Art and preserved the important Yoruba cultural site, the Sacred Grove in Oshogbo, from destruction. The grove has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007.
